Katherine Throne

Wānaka

Katherine Throne is a contemporary painter based in Wanaka. Using thick oil paint and loose gestural brushstrokes, her paintings depict the tenacity and beauty of nature. Katherine’s use of colour, juxtaposition of surface texture and handling of light and shadow create compositions that demand the view’s attention, drawing them into a world where energy and life are palpable.

Katherine has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Art. Her Bachelor of Fine Art is from Kendall College of Art and Design in Michigan, USA, where she was awarded a Merit scholarship to study.

Katherine has been a finalist in many national awards including the National Contemporary Art Award, The Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award, and the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award. Her paintings are held in public collections including Grand Valley State University (USA) and St Cuthberts College in Auckland, as well as private collections across the world.
