Jane Dodd
Ōtepoti, Dunedin
Jane Dodd received her jewellery training at Unitec in Auckland in the early 1990s. She subsequently joined Workshop 6, an influential jewellery collective, where she developed an independent studio practice recognised for its technical excellence and distinctive aesthetic language. While her initial work focused primarily on metal, Dodd has expanded her repertoire to include a range of materials such as bone, shell, stone, and wood.
In 2009, Dodd returned to Dunedin, her hometown, and continues to exhibit across New Zealand and internationally. Her creations are held in numerous private and public collections, including Te Papa Tongarewa, Die Neue Sammlung – Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, and Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
In 2021, The Dowse Art Museum presented a major survey of her work, accompanied by a comprehensive hardback catalogue entitled Wild Domain. In 2024, Tūhuru Otago Museum featured an engaging exhibition, The Kingdom – animals in the jewellery of Jane Dodd, in the Animal Attic.
Diverse natural materials, themes from the environment and animal world, homages to historic crafts, critiques of modern society, mysterious plotlines, comedy and tragedy can all be found in her jewellery.
