Painting Places

01 - 29 November 24

Opening night:
Friday 1st November, 5pm – 7pm

My style has developed to be a modernist expressionism. My work is painterly and swings between being representative and abstract. At first, I was producing figurative work along my landscapes, but have recently concentrated on the latter. I only paint landscapes and places where I’ve been and I try to distil the composition to the essence of the scene or moment, curating the landscape and simply leaving out what’s not needed.

Since Aotearoa became my new home in 2007, I have travelled up and down the country photographing moments and scenes from the far North to the deep South. Taking time in shooting photos that tell a story of the place, my compositions always originate in my photography of the landscape. By using the viewfinder as primary canvas, I decide if the emphasis will be on emotionality, light, form or colour.

Essentially my art is storytelling. Stories about places, moments and memories. Sculpture, photography and prose play a large part in my creative process and I often include these elements in my exhibitions.
