Opening night:

Introducing new handcarved woodcut sculptural works by Michel Tuffery, each drawing a strong connection to ‘The life cycle of Mahina’, first shown in 2024. Indelible markings of elements of the natural world and environmental linkages, designs and motifs now a trigger for sensory memory, a Taonga carried on from the Upeti block in the making of Tapa cloth which is imbued with recording lineage, location and a valued cultural commodity held in the highest esteem.
Michel Tuffery is a New Zealand-based artist of Samoan, Rarotongan and Ma’ohi Tahitian heritage. Within his art practice, Michel plays the role of working ‘in between’ people and places and focusing a fresh lens on environmental, community, cultural and art historical divides.
