Eliza Glyn (b. 1975, Dorset, UK) is a painter and draughtswoman based in Port Chalmers, Dunedin. She was educated at a Steiner school and the Krishnamurti School in Hampshire before studying visual art and contemporary dance at Bennington College, Vermont, graduating in 1999. Since relocating to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2008, she has presented numerous solo exhibitions throughout the country. Her work has been reviewed in Art New Zealand and featured in Landfall Tauraka: Aotearoa New Zealand Arts and Letters.
From her studio in Port Chalmers, Glyn maintains a sustained painting practice shaped by close observation, memory and constructed atmosphere. She is particularly known for her distinctive landscapes of Otago Harbour, in which familiar coastal forms are transformed through shifting light, compressed space and a sense of psychological intensity. Alongside these, her still life’s bring together domestic objects, collected ceramics, textiles and art materials, creating intimate arrangements that emerge from the interplay between everyday family life and the objects from her studio space. These paintings become visual narratives in which her family life and artist life converge, each work telling a story of the continual meeting of the domestic and the creative. Across both bodies of work, Glyn explores perception and subjectivity, allowing places and objects to become sites of memory, ambiguity and emotional resonance.
