Agneta Ekholm originates from Finland and now resides in Melbourne.
After considerable art training in Finland, Ekholm continued her studies in Fine Art Painting at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Ekholm is an international artist having exhibited across Australia and Finland and having worked on collaborative projects with South American artists. Ekholm has also exhibited in NZ, London, Hong Kong, featured in the Singapore Art Fair, 2008 and exhibited in Iceland at the Nordic House in 2011. She has work in many public and private collections across Australasia, Scandinavia, Asia and the US. There is an undeniable Scandinavian quality to Ekholm’s painting style. It is clear and crisp and executed exceptionally. Through the application of brush and manipulation of both brushes and sponges on the canvas she fluidly makes each curve of paint by hand, layer over layer in direct communication with the painting. A sense of flowing movement captured in a moment, held and explored, every colour, shift in light and texture carefully refined. Ekholm creates abstract paintings evocative of emotive and sensual experience through shifting coats of fine thin pigment held in time and space against a stark backdrop that lead to a curiosity of depth and narrative. They simultaneously take you within the visual experience and within yourself. Inspiration for her comes from childhood memories of living within an environment of ice encapsulated nature. She draws from visual stimuli that was seen held in an inaccessible tomb of transparency. Ekholm says her art practice is “an introspective exploration of these ambiguous images and an attempt to create similar emotional triggers from the basis of my work”. An effect that is not lost on Melbourne based art historian, critic and author Dr. Christopher Heathcote who after seeing an exhibition of paintings spoke of the gentle “sensations and intuitions” an artist who through her individual language was able to capture a personal dialogue that superseded the canvas and conveyed to the viewer a powerful yet delicate inner thought. Something every artist strives to achieve is that moment of intimate communication between an artwork and its audience, the context be what it is is given a new realm to expand in and continues through that experience.
Ekholm has the ability to transcend painting into experience.
